Starting older and moving current: Census 1820, 1820: Look for cross-over Wilcox’s who were in Pennsylvania and then in Ohio – especially with male child in right age group. (assumption: all Wilcox’s are correctly captured in relevant census for both states… not perfect odds) Look outside census for other historical documentation of families, historical societies, ancestry books, etc. How to find land ownership records beyond Ancestry.com (tax records) ?? How to find court documents, e.g. wills etc. ??

1830: Look for Wilcox families who were in Pennsylvania in 1820 with a male child <10 AND a male child in the 10-14 age group (he would be approx 13) in 1830 in either Pennsylvania OR Ohio.
To find ‘other’ possible relatives, e.g. uncles, cousins, etc. look for ANY Wilcox’s who were in Pennsylvania and then later Ohio during this time frame.
The Wilcox Story (Research done as of 12.26.2015)
Pennsylvania In 1817, it had been 41 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Revolutionary War was followed by the War of 1812 with Britain (which had battles through 1815). The USA consists of 20 states and James Madison is president. The earliest Wilcox story, so far, begins in Pennsylvania about 1817 when Barnum Wilcox (eventually to become a “Sr.”) is born. It is likely they lived in rural country and were farmers. There were probably Wilcox relatives nearby. The census at that time only listed the head of house’s name and a check mark for relatives in various categories.
The search continues for the gap between 1817 and 1840 In 1820, in Pennsylvania there are 20 Wilcox families; of those 11 have at least 1 male child less than 10 years old. In 1820, in
In the 1840 census Barnum Wilcox (Sr.) 22, wife, Julia A, and infant son (Robert) were living in Burlington Township, Licking County, Ohio and his occupation was listed as employed in Agriculture. In later census, both Barnum and Julia are recorded as having been born in Pennsylvania. It is unclear whether they moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio as children with their parents, or later as adults either single or already married. But it had to be prior to 1839 when oldest son Robert is reported to have been born in Ohio.
In the 1850 census, Barnum Wilcox (Sr.) age 33 and family had moved to Kingston township, Delaware County Ohio (approximately 25 miles from their previous residence). Barnum now lists his occupation as “lawyer”. His family is listed as: wife Julia A, 32; son Robert, 11; son Barnum (Jr), 10; and 1 yr old daughter “Miranda”is the digital translation and actual name is difficult to read.
Barnum Sr., died the following year on 2 May 1851. His wife, Julia A. died seven months later on 9 Dec 1851. The cause of their death is not known, however it is possible they died in a cholera epidemic. They are buried in Stark Cemetary, Delaware County, Ohio. At this point, I haven’t discovered any further information about the earlier history of the parents or what happened to the children immediately after their parents’ death.
Barnum Wilcox Jr. (b. 1842 Ohio –d. 1874 Ohio Civil War There was a Barnum Wilcox in the Union Regular Army. It would fit the timeline for it to be ‘our’ Barnum Jr. (1842-1874). He would have been 19 at the time this Regiment was organized in Columbus, Ohio and if he stayed through to the end, July 1865, he would have been about 23. It is possible there is further information about his person, but it needs to be requested from the government archives as noted on the link below. There was o ‘another’ Barnum Wilcox who served as a volunteer with the Pennsylvania volunteers. However later census records show ‘parallel’ records of this Barnum continuing to live in Pennsylvania with different family at the same time. Therefore, this is not ‘our’ Barnum Wilcox.
In Aug 1864, Barnum’s brother Robert Wilcox joined the Ohio volunteers to fight in the Civil War. He was discharged in May 1865. Further information about the battles he fought in is available on the website with the link above. Double check to make sure this is the correct Robert…note the late dates, county draft documents of 1863 Show Robert as married and not having served yet
The 1860’s census has largely been destroyed. Partial reconstructions do not include relevant ancestors on this line.
The 1870 census: The census shows both brothers, Barnum and Robert, living in Porter Township, County of Delaware, Ohio with their families. By this time the two brothers have married sisters.
Barnum Jr. is listed as 28 yrs old, a broom maker and as blind. His wife is Martha Spangler Wilcox, 21, and they have a 3 month old baby, Norris A born Feb 1870. They are all three listed as having been born in Ohio.
Robert Wilcox has married Eveline Spangler (Martha’s older sister) in 1860. They have 4 children, ages 1-7. Ten years later, in the 1880 census, Robert and Eveline have two additional children and all 6 children are living at home, ages 3-17. In later census, Robert is reported to have Chrohn’s Disease. Martha and Eveline’s parents, John and Abigail Spangler, live in the same town and are in the same 1870 census with a large family.

I, Barnum Wilcox born in Licking County in the State of Ohio aged Nineteen years, and by occupation a Farmer DO HEREBY ACKNOWLEDGE to have voluntarily enlisted this twenty-seventh day of August 1861, as a Soldier in the Army of the United States of America, for the period of three YEARS, unless sooner discharged by proper authority: Do also agree to accept such bounty, pay, rations, and clothing, as are, or may be, established by law. Eveline Spangler Wilcox — the 1911 obituary
OBITUARY.
Mrs. Eveline Wilcox, daughter of John and Abagail Spangler was born August 17, 1839 and departed this life November 22, 1911, at the age of 72 years, 3 montns and 5 days. She was united in marriage August 19, 1860 to Robert Wilcox and to this union was born eight children five boys and three girls. Her husband and two children have preceeded her to the Better Land. She united with the Olive Green Methodist Church in the year 1887 and has proved a faithful member.
Besides her children and grandchildren, she leaves two sisters and two brothers and likewise a host of friends to mourn their loss. Her long life has been one of loving service to her husband a helpmeet, to her children in care and council, to her friends and neighbors when a friend was most welcome and to her Maker who has now called her from her labors to her rest and reward. For we doubt not but the Master has said, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter into the joys of thy Lord.

My ancestor's services in assisting in the establishment of American Independence during the War of the Revolution were as follows:
"In 1775 George Spangler was a member of Capt. George Eichelberger's Company and in 1776 was Lieutenant of the Second Company, Third Battalion, York County Militia and marched with the Battalion the same year to New Jersey to form the 'Flying Camp.' At the instance of the Philadelphia Council of Safety on Sept. 18, 1777 an order was drawn on David Rittenhouse, Esq., Treasurer of the State, in favor of George Spangler for the sum of 6 pounds and 10 shillings for his services riding express on public business. He was Lieutenant Col. of the 113th Regt., York County Militia, in 1801 and with his Command in 1814 rendezvoused in York in readiness to repel the British attack on Baltimore. (War of 1812) He was a member of the State Legislature, 1803-1809, County Treasurer of York County, 1814-1817, and other positions of Honor and trust were conferred upon him."
